It often feels like you’re fighting the same guys over and over just with different colours (not even skins.) It’s particularly bad because it’s even the bosses you feel that way about. Especially as, though I’m pretty glowing about this game in general, it does have flaws.įor one-enemy variety isn’t the best. Oh! And it’s got branching paths! Though the version we played set the dip-switches to just have all the levels played through, which is good if you want to see all the content, but does make the game just a bit too long. ![]() #GAME ADDER XBOX 360 FULL#Not only can you ride creatures, you can even equip them with ballistas(!?) that are otherwise locked in place, and the magic attacks can create amazing full screen animations of enemies having the flesh rendered from their faces, or design-wise offer different ways to play (Trix, the elf character, has a magic attack that drops health, which is amazing in multiplayer.) Then, you’ve got heroes with a wide variety of moves-not just attacks and specials, but stun attacks, combos, running attacks and group attacks when more than one player attacks an enemy at once (which are great). First off, you’ve got a lot of scaling going on. Because it’s… great? So great that it’s super weird that they never released it anywhere else? Did someone who worked on it piss someone else at Sega off? I mean, there are some flaws, but it’s interesting that for a game from 1992 it feels like it pushes side-scrolling beat-em-ups further than games that followed would for at least a while. ![]() ![]() Revenge of Death Adder, though… it’s a surprise. #GAME ADDER XBOX 360 PS2#I’ve got some history with Golden Axe: I’ve finished the Mega Drive version, and even finished the terrible (terrible!) Sega Ages PS2 version, which I remember beating on my last life on my last credit, and it was so fricking thrilling because I so desperately didn’t want to have to play the game ever again (and probably wouldn’t if I had fell at the last hurdle, honestly.) The original Golden Axe-if you care-is a perfectly serviceable side-scrolling beat-me-do, pretty much remembered because you could ride those little “chicken leg” creatures and beat up the wee gnomes that tried to steal your magic. But maybe you count it, I don’t know.)Īnyway. (I say true with a question mark, too, because of course there’s Golden Axe II for Mega Drive, but it’s basically just a level pack for the first game, so barely counts. It didn’t even get released on the Saturn or something in Japan, which is kind of weird honestly because it’s exactly the kind of thing you’d think they’d have done that with. In a nice tradition, it’s been about a year since I last finished something in the arcade ( Chase HQ) and this time it’s actually even better, because I got to finish off Sega AM1’s Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder with some pals (Brandon Sheffield and Dirk Neely) and it’s the true (?) sequel to Golden Axe, which for some reason was never ever ported to anything.
